Why are some artist shelved?

There may be a number of reasons why some artist are shelved.

One reason may be that the artists may have been very similar to what the label had previously signed and to ensure little competition the label signed the new artist without any real intention of releasing the artist. Another reason may be that the artist upset someone at the label, say someone in the marketing department. Additionally, the artist's team may not be very aggressive in ensuring that the artist project not get shelved. The team may be management or legal.

The Music Industry Connection Book Series has a list of contacts and resources to assist you in building the right team and going the extra mile.

Starting & Running Your Record Company

During the How to Run Your Own Record Company panel at the SMES Music Conference in Myrtle Beach, speakers were sharing their experiences and information on how to run an independent record label. As the moderator, I was asked to facilitate a systematic way of starting and running a record label. Throughout the panel I stressed the importance of three basic stages for increasing your chances for business success:

  1. THINK –consider what, when, why, where and how you’ll do what you
  2. PLAN –write down what you’ve thought about in outline form
  3. EXECUTE –do what you’ve written down

We also discussed the importance and how to get your paperwork in order. These steps included:

  1. Applying for a business license
  2. Setting up either an LLC or Corporation
  3. Getting a U.S. Post Office Box
  4. Getting an E.I.N. or federal tax i.d.
  5. Opening a business checking account
  6. Hiring a C.P.A. (certified public accountant) or buying accounting software
  7. Hiring an competent entertainment attorney
  8. Creating a business plan
  9. Setting up your own website like GOJAWAR.COM (myspace is not your space)

After reviewing this vital information one of the panelists chimed in and suggesting that you didn’t really need this paperwork initially. He continued by saying that what you have to do is “get it hot,” implying that you must create awareness and grow a buzz about your music as your first objective.

While I agree that you have to get hot by creating a buzz and awareness, I think that one must also address the two phases of this concept. The first part is the test-market phase. During test-marketing your goal is to see if you actually have a single that people will like. For example if you have a club record, you’ll want to service it to DJ’s and get their feedback about how well your single is received by their listeners. The second phase is to work the single. This phase should only be pursued after you’ve tested your music to confirm that it is indeed hot with your core listeners and buying audience. I speak about this in-depth in both the Atlanta Music Industry Connection and Los Angeles Music Industry Connection Books.

Unfortunately many independent music labels often skip the thinking and planning stages and go right to the execution part, getting it hot, often setting themselves up for failure. There’s no shortage of musical talent, but what often lacks is creative business talent and music industry consultants that will help set up and run a successful independent music label. Additionally, many independent music labels invest so much money into the music that when it’s time to market, promote and hire business talent they’ve exhausted and spent all of their financial resources.

Give your company the best opportunity for long-term success by filing your paperwork and/or hiring a company that will do it on your behalf. In order for your music label to succeed you’ll need star musical talent, creative business professionals and money. Study any successful music label, one that was in business developing star talent, making money and hits for over 10 years, and you’ll find that they had these three ingredients.

Real Music Business Education

JaWar speaks on real music business education. Real music business education often means you'll become self taught by experience, reading books, attending music conferences, viewing music business videos and playing an active role in the music industry. Below is a video while I was speaking at a music conference.

Did you know you could start making money online in the music industry? You'll need to become an affiliate member and start promoting online music seminars (webinars/teleseminar). When someone uses the service you get paid a commission. It's that simple.

Rap City Leaves Music Business

This may be seen as a blow to Hip Hop for many, but for the chosen few there's opportunity. What opportunity you may ask... It starts with a mind set, followed by planning, the final stage is execution -THINK, PLAN, EXECUTE!

There are millions of viewers and lovers of Hip Hop and Rap Music around the world who have more access to music videos and music than ever before. Our family at BET/Rap City missed the boat as many corporations have with the Internet and Mobile Technology. They failed to capture and retain the audience that was growing online an audience that was/is hungry for more and more great music by new and established recording artist.

While many of us will miss BET's Rap City, it's time we grow up and move on to new ventures. It's time we explore new opportunities. It's time the independent music producer, recording artist and media company find and feed the hungry lovers of Hip Hop and Rap Music from around the world.

This is your time, my time, our time. Download Industry Pimping, the Music Industry Connection Book Series and visit the Music Business Blog to explore opportunities to BOOST YOUR BUSINESS and Music Career.

Music Business Economy

As the sun rises each morning and sets each evening, as babies are born, become adults and return from whence they came we are reminded that everything has a life cycle. Our economy in general and the music business in particular is no different as they can not escape the natural order of things and the laws of the universe for with the pull of gravity that which goes up will come down and that which is down will go up as long as the earth continues to spin on its' axes.

What does this have to do with the music industry you may ask? More importantly how does any of this help or hurt your music business and music career?

Over the past few weeks I've had private conversations with many people in the music business who are in the top 10% of income earners in the United States ($250,000+ annually). All of them have told me how their businesses have taken significant losses (decreased sales/sells and cash flow).

Music sells continue to decline, music conference attendance continues to decrease and job layoffs continue to mount. Due to significant increases in fuel and food prices and overall consumer goods it has made it financially difficult for many people to travel in pursuit of achieving their goals and realizing their potential.

We are going through what some call a market correction. You see after years of excess spending, wasting and not planting and nurturing, the economy as a whole and the music business in particular said enough is enough. Remember everything has its' life cycle.

You should know that before it gets better things may get worse, so tighten your belt strap and prepare to ride, but there's good news, perhaps
GREAT NEWS should you continue in the pursuit of happiness in achieving your goals and realizing your potential in life in general and the music business in particular. The GREAT NEWS is that in no other time in the history of mankind has the entrepreneur and small business owner been able to participate in the global economy without having to leave the comfort of their own home office.

My own testimony may be biased I admit, but it's true, I make money online in the music business. I literally have the opportunity to generate an unlimited amount of revenue day after day, month after month and year after year. It's no easy task, but like my friends, business associates and perhaps like you, I too am negatively effected by the downturn in the U.S. economy in general and the music industryin particular.

I am
MOTIVATED TO WIN, I see opportunity when others see defeat! My current condition may be the cause of others, but that's the slave mentality. My current existence is the SUM TOTAL of my thoughts, words, actions and in actions up until this very moment, for I was born in the likeness and image of the CREATOR and have been given dominion over the earth and things.

As the sun rises each morning and sets each evening, as babies are born, become adults and return from whence they came I'm reminded that everything has a life cycle. Our economy in general and the music industry in particular is no different as they can't escape the natural order of things for with the pull of gravity that which goes up will come down and that which is down will go up as long as the earth continues to spin on its' axes.
