Broke in the Music Business

I'd asked a young man if he were going to be at the Come Claim the Mic Music Conference in Birmingham recently. His response was "I wish, but I'm broke." My response was as follows...

Being broke and being rich are states of mind. Money comes and goes, we can't eat it, nor can we wipe our assets with it.

The question one would ask is what value can one bring to other people and/or businesses. When you figure out how to bring value to others you'll figure out what to sell. In figuring out what to sell, you'll position yourself to make money.

I long figured that I'm able to organize thoughts and people. Organizing thoughts and people has led me to presenting conferences [on how to make money online], seminars & workshops [on the music business], writing blogs, ebooks, books, building websites and creating a number of videos. In addition, I consult with a number of companies to improve their bottom lines and market their corporations.

I suggest you visit both JaWar, Make Money Online Goldmine, Make Money Online, and Music Industry Connection. On these sites you'll find a number of resources, tips, links and information to help you boost your career and make money on the Internet.

Mobile Music Business

What are you most likely to have access to on a regular basis?
  1. Your Desktop
  2. Your Laptop
  3. Your Cell Phone
It's safe to say you'll have greater access to your cell phone within a 24-hour period. The reason I mention this is that for all the discussion about the Internet and making money online in the industry we need to remember that the mobile music business has a gigantic potential for marketing and selling music, videos and building your brand.

From a legal standpoint you want to realize that the mobile music business is and will continue to be a huge space, therefore you should not be so quick to sign exclusive deals that may give away future earnings -your money. For this reason I strongly suggest hiring a competent entertainment lawyer who has knowledge about digit rights.

The mobile music business is bigger than selling ringtones. It's about connecting with music fans on a personal level, it's about building your brand in a dynamic fashion, it's about marketing and selling your digital package -music/ringtones/videos/wallpapers/membership to your private website/access to intimate private shows/etc. As technology improves more wireless (cell phone) carriers will offer better mobile web browsing (surfing) similar to what Apple has done with iphone.

To date the U.S. seems to be a generation or two behind Asian Countries when it comes to mobile technology. I said that to say look to Asia to see what may be on the horizon in the U.S., Canada and Mexico in the coming years. If you get a jump over the competition you may be able build your brand faster, smarter and cheaper, thereby giving you a leg up in the mobile music business spectrum.

Downloads Soar in Coming Year

According to By Lars Brandle -Billboard.biz

"British consumers will likely spend more than £160 million ($312 million) on digital downloads this year, up by roughly 50% from the previous year, according to new figures published by ERA Digital, a division of the Entertainment Retailers Association trade body."

"A spike in interest for full album downloads is one of the catalysts for growth, ERA reports, a format which is forecast to account for £69.4 million ($135 million) in sales this year. Single track downloads will be worth an estimated £96.4 million ($188 million)." Read the full article -click here.

Over the past two years I've been aggressively encouraging independent record labels and recording artists to investigate the New Music Business Model and learn how to make money online. It is apparent that digital distribution will continue to soar. To position yourself to make money on the Internet you'll need a comprehensive list of digital distribution companies. The Los Angeles Music Industry Connection Ebook provides such a list. You'll also want to attend music conferences that have make money online seminars as part of their program.

The goal is to build your brand online and off as a music business professional. As you build your brand you'll want to direct people to your own website. On your website you'll have to sell something in order to position you to make residual/passive income -money while you sleep.

I'm often asked does the Music Industry Connection Book Series help people? Do my make money online seminars and workshops truly empower? And do I have any references of clients I've consulted.

One of the best ways to answer that question is by encouraging you to read what ThedyB -songwriter/singer wrote.

"JaWar told me about Tempo Tuesdays at the Atlanta SESAC office so I started regularly attending that event and meeting people. I also purchased JaWar's book, the Atlanta Music Industry Connection book (which I highly recommend) and read his music industry blogs." Read the full story click here. ThedyB
