Music Business Global Money

In case you didn't get the memo we are in a global economy. Big business isn't as exciting as it use to be. Power is in the hands of the people. Micro-payments will probably make more multi-millionaires and a few billionaires than ever before. Music may continue to be free for consumers and paid for by businesses seeking to license full length songs, snippets, instrumentals, special mixes and so forth. Do you still want to participate in the music business?

As you look into more ways to sell/sale your music and brand related merchandise across borders you'll want to know what exchange rates are from one currency to the next. Of course, Paypal offers this option for free for customers. If you don't feel like going to your Paypal account, but needed to quickly know how much money you'd have by converting your currency against another you may want to check with Google's Currency Converter. It's a neat tool and may come in real handy one day.

Music Business, Twitter, Almost Famous

The big word of the day at the Almost Famous Showcase in Atlanta was BOB and Twitter. Twitter is micro or mini-blogging. You may do it either from your cell phone or the web. In either case most people don't get it when they first get on, but after hearing about Twitter from a few sources you begin to get the hint that it's time to jump on the train before it's to late.

Rovella, Founder, Almost Famous made personalized tags for her Music Business Twitter Group. The host of the show and TJ Chapman mentioned Twitter several times while on stage. People were walking about the club not handing out business cards so much, but exchanging Tweets letting others know they were missing the high level communication (networking) taking place. DJ Aaries, Isis Wisdom-Word on the Streets Mag and DJ Scorpio-Master Mind Music included JaWar in a Tweet they sent from Sugar Hill Atlanta.

By now you should get the not so obvious hint that you need to be on Twitter as it's a great way to network with music business professionals, publicist, pr companies, mainstream and independent media, taste makers and other thought leaders. Twitter is growing at an alarming rate and soon it too will be commercialized in a way that any business must do to survive, but for now it's still a bit of a hidden gem.

Who else was walking about Almost Famous talking and tweeting -DJ Judge Mental, Kim Wilson & KimbelyJo, Laura -StarLitPR, DJ Magestic, Haziq (who opened for BOB), Corey Webb and a host of other Atlanta Notables.

Hip Hop Music Business for Change

Below is a repost from an email, I received. The email has been edited for clarity, but I attempted to maintain the integrity of the original message.

THIS IS DONTAZE STORY

This young man was unnecessarily shot dead, killed by L.A.P.D. on November 11, 2008. Leaving a pregnant fiancee. He was shot right in front of her, first in the back of the leg then in the chest and mouth. It is extremely sad to say this is another one of those 'we thought his cell phone was a gun' shootings, as he was trying to catch up with his fiancee after they both had just left a pharmacy two blocks from their house.

Community organizations are involved. This Hip-Hop project is designed to really deal with this reality head on, up close, coast to coast; and ultimately being a part of the solution, beginning with spreading the word about our collective experiences.

Looking for four MC's for a Hip-Hop project dealing with the reality of police brutality, harassment and the overall experiences in the community. Others who may not be rappers, but who would like to participate in some form with the project are welcome as well.

Contact: Mighty Might at www.myspace.com/mightymight808 send message stating you would like to get involved. CONTACT info@ancientuniversity.org or call 562-243-2464

Charity in the Music Business

Yesterday Kim Wilson-Mindflux Marketing organized a toys for tots at Big Oomp Records in Atlanta. DJ Toomp, DJ Jelly, DJ Magestic, Isis, P. Brown, Yamil, A-Town Day and a host of other music industry personalities came out to give support through time, toys and other chartiable contributions. The event was about helping those less fortune.

Toys were distributed to the babies and food to their families. For a brief moment there were no worries for anyone just giving, talking and usual music industry networking. Radio One's Hot 107.9 did a live remote call in, SIR, Streettalk and Word on the Streets Magazines were there to cover the event as well.

The event reminded me how important it is to share and give back to those less fortune than yourself throughout the year. By doing this we all position ourselves to be positive contributors in our communities. Additionally, we also are in a position to receive assistance from others. Remember there's always somebody lower and higher than were you are. At the end of the day you're always in the middle.

Writer's ToolBox for Publishing

Would it be fantastic if you had over 20 writing and publishing resources right at your finger tips? How about I came across a fantastic blog while on Twitter and wanted to keep the information private, but that would go against who I am and what I'm here to do, which is to help you achieve your goals and realize your potential as a published author.

You know it's going to be extremely difficult for you to not exceed with all of the resources on this self-publishing blog and what I found while on Twitter. In any event visit Mashable for a list of over 20 writing and publishing resources.

You'll also want to visit publisherspublishing.com a relatively new community for writers, author and book publishers. Since, starting that community I find myself there more often than not.

Music Business 2008 Q4

The end of 2008 has turned out to be some experience both for the music business and the community at large.?

Some of the things I've done recently have been interviewed on several Internet radio stations, moderated music business panels, attended music industry networking parties, had a meeting at TI's recording studio and record label Grand Hustle, set up my Twitter Account, started using video on a very regular basis, been consistent with the Motivational Music Radio Show with Ty Cohen-Internet Marketing Guru all while continuing with generating residual/passive income using my intellectual property ie making money online.

Despite numerous reports that many countries are in an economic recession I continue to THINK, PLAN and EXECUTE for a bright future of being Happy, Healthy and Wealthy.

Cee-Lo Green in the Music Business

Cee-Lo Green has a new music label and has a vision on doing great things in the near future. Brad "Cza" Edge Sr., is helping Cee-Lo run the label called Radiculture Records. There's more information coming, but I wanted to drop a bug in my readers eyeballs. Get ready for a fantastic situation developing. They say make music, make love, make money. I say how 'bout that, there!

Networking in the Music Business

On Monday, Dec. 1, 2008 I moderated another music business panel for the Step Yah Game Up Event. The panel included a few multi-platinum music producers, songwriters and industry executives.

To date I've only had two people to follow up with me with a venue that had between 150 to 200 people, many whom are recording artist, aspiring music producers, singers, songwriters and so forth. While the number of people that have follow up seems low, percentage wise it's right on time. Most people attend music business conferences, industry panel discussions and networking events and still don't get it. They think that stardom, riches and fame happen because they make great music or because they represent an artist that makes great music.

Science teaches us that objects in motion tend to stay in motion. Therefore it would be beneficial for someone looking to rise above the rest to network, by giving out business cards, collecting business cards, shaking hands, introducing themselves and really working the room before and after a music business panel or music conference.

Toe out of New Orleans followed up with a phone call. To show you how repetition is the key, Toe and I have ran into each other a few times at various music industry events. We've spoke briefly in the past. While at Step Yah Game Up we made it a point to converse a bit more. I suggested that he follow up with me via a phone call, he asked when I said tomorrow and he called me two days later. Thing happen, but he did call in what I consider to be a relatively short time. We are now talking to see how my firm may be able to give him greater education on the music business and create and implement a strategic plan so he may be in a better position to achieve his goals and realize his potentional.

Kim L. Atwater, President/CEO, One Entertainment ELSS and One Entertainment PE also contact me from Step Yah Game Up and did so email.

One never knows where a handshake, business card exchange or collection of email address will lead, but rest assured if you stand still you'll get left behind. What will you do within the next 24 hours to adjust yourself to make residual/passive income in business and possibly the music industry? Follow me at twitter.com/jawar for motivational messages.

JaWar and Chaos on the Radio

Last night I had the chance to share music business resources and information during the Urban Entertainment Spot radio program with host D. Blake. Chaos with GrindMode was also on the call. The chat room was very lively with a number of people asking questions and thanking us for sharing details about the music industry.

Chaos spoke about his work ethic and having a hands on approach as ceo of his growing media empire. He shared his experience of how he went to every little open mic and music showcase throughout Miami serving the DJs with proper business etiquette, never forgetting his core market. While he recently inked a deal with Universal Republic he seemed humble while passionate and willing to share the reality of the current music business model and what it takes to get you to the next level. Chaos made it clear that the music business isn't all fun and games rather it's real work that takes a certain personality to move forward and not just achieve, but to keep what has been earned.

Finally, one of the most significant things I picked up while on the call was to appreciate the small accomplishments along the way and that success truly is a journey not a destination.
